Depression is a common and debilitating mental health problem. The majority of people with depression will experience a full recovery, however for some the outlook is uncertain. This includes people whose depression is a chronic condition (sometimes called ‘treatment resistant’ depression) and those who have recurrent episodes of major depression (also termed ‘relapsing’ depression). For these people, recognising depression as a lifelong condition and providing support for self-management requires a re-orientation of services.
